Eelco Meesters took his medical finals at the UvA and completed his specialization in 1999. His teaching hospitals are the Slotervaart Hospital and the AMC. From 1999 he worked at the Slotervaart Hospital as a general internist. Since January 2019, he has been strengthening the team of internists at the Jan van Goyen Medical Center.
During his work at the Slotervaart, Eelco Meesters participated in various studies with new medicines, especially for diabetes and the fight against overweight. He has also been involved from the start in setting up the Bariatrics Department (gastric reduction procedures) within the Slotervaart Hospital. Since 2019 he has been working part of the time in the Spaarne Gasthuis (bariatry department), after this department was taken over by the Spaarne Gasthuis of the Slotervaart Hospital.
Another aspect that he has devoted a lot of attention to and has conducted projects and research into since 1999 is the treatment of and communication with patients with diabetes of a non-Western background. This in collaboration with, among others, the Dutch Diabetes Federation.
Within his field of medicine, Eelco Meesters strives for the optimal result by deploying new treatment options when they have added value. And all this based on the wishes of the patient.
“I think open and personal contact with patients is important, where this contact is the basis for getting the best possible result from the treatment. Given the group of patients (diabetes, other endocrinology and kidney diseases), this often has a chronic character.”
