Wietse Melman studied Medicine at the University of Groningen. He then trained as an orthopedic surgeon at the Isala hospital in Zwolle, the University Medical Center in Groningen and the Medisch Spectrum Twente. During his training he developed a strong interest in the lower extremity (the legs; from the hips to the feet). After his training, he had the opportunity to further explore this through a fellowship and to practice orthopedic surgery at the highest level.
'Orthopedic surgery is a wonderful profession. As an orthopedic surgeon you can make an enormous contribution to the mobility of a patient. My goal is to make it possible for the patient to get the most out of life.'
