Surgery at Jan van Goyen Medical Center

Surgery is a medical specialty that focuses on treating physical conditions through surgical interventions. This can range from minor surgical interventions to more complex operations. At Medisch Centrum Jan van Goyen we offer treatments for proctological conditions, abdominal wall hernias and various minor surgical procedures.

When do you go to the Surgery outpatient clinic?

You can go to the Surgery outpatient clinic for many different surgical procedures:

Abdominal wall fractures

Abdominal wall hernias are caused by a weak spot or opening in the abdominal wall. This can lead to complaints such as swelling or pain. You can contact Jan van Goyen for:

  • Umbilical hernia
  • Upper abdominal hernia
  • Incisional hernia
  • ACNES (only by drs. F. Garssen)
  • LACNES  (only by drs. F. Garssen)
  • Xifodynia  (only by drs. F. Garssen)

Inguinal hernias

A inguinal hernia is a protrusion of abdominal contents – such as fat or a piece of intestine – through a weak spot in the abdominal wall at the groin. Sometimes an inguinal hernia does not cause any symptoms, but if you experience pain or have other symptoms, an inguinal hernia operation may be necessary.

Proctology

Proctology focuses on the treatment of conditions around the anus. We treat, among other things:

Minor surgical procedures

In addition to the above treatments, we also offer various minor surgical procedures. These treatments are often performed on an outpatient basis, so you can return home quickly.

Our specialists

We strive to always have your appointments with the same proctologist. You can ask for it if necessary. Even in the event of an operation, your own proctologist will perform the operation and also provide aftercare. Since we are not a teaching hospital, you will not see an intern or doctor/specialist in training. This way we can offer you the best personal care in Amsterdam.

Experiences with surgery

It was still a bit embarrassing for me to talk about my hemorrhoids. I hoped it would go away on its own, but unfortunately it didn't. My GP referred me to the Proctology outpatient clinic of the Jan van Goyen Medical Center. After a few treatments I was completely rid of my complaints.
The itching around my anus just didn't go away. I tried a lot to get rid of it myself, but it didn't happen. After an examination at the Jan van Goyen Medical Center I was found to have fistulas. It was a bit crazy to show it to the doctor, but I am now very grateful to him for the treatment.
The doctor helped me tremendously with my fissures. It bothered me for a long time when I went to the bathroom. At one point it was so bad that I tried to keep my stools down, but that is of course very bad. I am relieved that I am now free of the pain.

Frequently Asked Questions about Surgery

To make an appointment at our proctology department, you need a referral from your general practitioner or another specialist.
No, hemorrhoids are not contagious. You don't have to be afraid to get them when someone close to you is bothered by them. However, there is a hereditary factor involved in hemorrhoids. If someone in your family suffers from this condition, there is a chance that you also have a predisposition to it.
We advise you to exercise again after one week, based on your complaints.
It is important that you let the stool come naturally and not strain. Once you have used the toilet, it is important that you rinse with lukewarm water. In addition, it is important that you ensure smooth bowel movements.
We cannot guarantee that you will never suffer from hemorrhoids again after the treatment. By ensuring regular and smooth bowel movements, you can prevent hemorrhoids as much as possible.
