Actinic keratoses

Actinic keratoses are also called sunspots. They are rough, flaky spots on the skin. They mainly occur in the face, on the bald scalp, and on the back of the hand. Actinic keratoses can develop into skin cancer. Preventive treatments by a dermatologist can make sure that this will not happen.

HOW DOES IT DEVELOP?

Actinic keratosis lesions are caused by the harmful effects of UV radiation on the skin. The fairer the skin, the higher the chance of developing this skin disorder.

Treatment

Actinic keratoses can be treated in several ways. This can be done, for example, by freezing the spot with liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy), with the application of a special cream, or by photodynamic therapy. You and the dermatologist will discuss the various treatments to assess which one will be most effective. In addition, taking measures to protect the skin against the sun is also essential to prevent the developing of actinic keratoses.
