Stellate ganglion block

The stellate ganglion block is a treatment by which an anaesthetic medication is injected into the neck at the location of a ganglion of the autonomic nervous system. The objective is to reduce pain. The treatment is used against nerve pain (also with reflex sympathetic dystrophy, DRS) in the face, neck, shoulder, chest, and/or arm. ‘Stellate’ is the medical term that refers to the ganglion in the neck. The term ‘block’ indicates that the perception of pain is basically ‘blocked’.
