An epidural injection is a procedure whereby an anti-inflammatory and sedative medication is administered into the epidural space. The epidural space is the space around the spinal cord and the nerve roots, located in the vertebral (spinal) canal. The purpose of an epidural injection is a reduction of pain. This is done by interrupting the pain conduction. The anti-inflammatory medication neutralises the inflammatory substances that are produced by the body, which often play an important role with pain. The treatment can either be given at the location of the neck, chest cavity, lower back, or tailbone.
